“If you’re not working hard, ideas don’t matter.
The best idea is worthless without execution.
If you’re already working hard, ideas are crucial.
Most effort is wasted on mediocre ideas.”
– James Clear
Greetings,
Thank you all for reading my newsletter. I greatly appreciate your attention!
I gained 1263 new subscribers in 2021. Going into 2022, I’m going to see what it takes to 10x that.
I want to get a lot better at creating value for you. I intend to create a lot more original content moving forward and will be experimenting with new formats.
I love to hear any feedback you have. Please respond to these emails at any time.

“90% of that growth came from 9 threads – which on their own generated 20,000,000 views. So here’s a recap of those 9 threads (and what they can help you with):— Dickie Bush”

“When you’re trying to build an audience, you need to understand who out there could be interested in you and your work. Before you can attract the right people, you must know where they are already gathering.
“Here is an approach that I have found incredibly fast and effective: you “draw a map” of the community you’re serving. You start with an outline. You mark the most prominent mountains, the most significant cities. Then, you add the details and the connections: rivers, roads, and everything else.”

“Alexis Ohanian (@alexisohanian), Founder of Reddit and Seven Seven Six (https://sevensevensix.com) joins the show to share his early lessons from Reddit, stories from Y Combinator, and why he’s betting big on Web3 communities and technologies.”
“The minimum viable community is going to become the new standard… Everyone is overwhelmed with options and attention is scarce as a result. and one of the best moats for that is community.”

“NFTs seem to me just a way for artists to get a little piece of the action from global capitalism, our own cute little version of financialization. ”
While I’m bullish on Web3, I agree that a lot of what’s popular now seems like a get-rich-quick scheme.
Here is a good example; NFTs of photos of Olive Garden restaurants that have no connection to the chain at all.

Rob Walling chats with Sam Parr about building an email list, selling to Hubspot, podcast growth, and how to spot business opportunities.
Highlights:
• Sam got 100k subscribers in the first year just from blogging.
• The economics of newsletters – The Hustle is sent 6 days a week (26 sends per month). Churn is 3% or 4% per month. You charge $35 per 1000 sends. They knew they make $18 per subscriber and it only costs $3 to acquire a new subscriber with paid ads.
• The power of TikTok – New accounts can get millions of views in a short time.

“The secret sauce to digital writing:
Kill the paragraph.
Nobody reads an entire article, start-to-finish, on the internet. It just doesn’t happen.
People DO skim and scan.
Use clear headlines, give each sentence its own line, and don’t use big words.
This sounds too simplistic, but trust me.”

“You achieve a Personal Monopoly once you become the go-to person in your area of expertise. Though students are drawn to the benefits of such expertise, they don’t want to pay the price of commitment required to achieve it.”
This is a powerful idea. Not enough creators commit to mastery. Almost everyone gives up too soon.
